THE RAW TRUTH

ON THE ROAD TO NOWHERE TO THE GOOD PLACE

Living in the concrete jungle beneath the busy flight path of Sydney Airport we were bored and frustrated with congested city life. After a year of drawing up Pros and Cons lists, we finally agreed that we had to do something different, make some changes, move away.

Taking a leap of faith into the wilds of the Australian bush seemed a leap too far for two city slickers, but we reasoned that nothing could be worse than our traffic-packed commutes and 60-hour working weeks. In hindsight, therapy may have been an easier option as we were never fully prepared for all that was about to change ….

Our big getaway began and ended with a one way trip to Toms Creek in 2017. Waving goodbye to city life, designer clothes, and comfortable cars, 5 hours later we were saying hello to nature, hi-vis jackets, utes and trailers.

It was a humble beginning of limited resources versus unlimited nature, but it ended up changing our perspectives and values for life. We now wake up looking forward to each day as we know that we are building a future that we are steering ourselves.

We've faced a lot of pitfalls and roadblocks, but we learned how to work around them to get to where we needed and wanted to go. We've seen it, we've done it, and now we're ready to share our story to show you how to make the journey much simpler and easier. Even if you are not ready for such a drastic life change, you'll find out what you need to know about living clean and green.

Instead of boring you with textbook 101 or confusing jargon that you need to Google, we're going to give you what we wish someone had given us - practical, solid, accountable and quantifiable advice that get results - and how to do it all IRL.

Why? Because we believe in second chances, hope, and adventures.

GROW YOUR OWN FUTURE

BUILD A SUSTAINABLE LIFE

We all know that COVID19 is changing the way that we live, but it is also giving us a chance to reinvent what we do and reveal who we can be. While many may simply want life to return to normal, the reality is that some things have changed for good, and good is what we want to create.

Sustainable living is about keeping yourself healthy, happy and safeguarding your future. Our bodies put up with a lot every day, from fast food to air pollution to a poor night’s sleep, so being aware of toxins and preventing them from entering your environment is the first step to living clean.

Whether you think about it or not, you have an impact on your environment every day with every choice that you make. You can very simply make a difference by choosing clothing, homeware, food, and packaging that is as natural, sustainable, reusable, and recyclable as possible.

Young couple frustrated with the bump and grind of congested city living, seeking a bigger adventure beyond their concrete box beneath the busy flight path of Sydney Airport.

We may have shared an open desire to live a better life, but there were a lot of How, What, Where, and Why questions. In the fairy tale a country mouse leaves to live in the city, but can two city mice leave and live in the country or would we get eaten by a wild cat?

After a year of talking about doing something different, making some changes, moving away, we began drawing up Pros and Cons lists and finally agreed a plan. The scrappy piece of paper we handed to the realtor simply said:

LAND + WATER + COUNTRYSIDE

SUSTAINABLE LIVING MICRO-COURSES

When we first decided to come to Toms Creek, I had told everyone that I was quitting life to start over and start living it. Cooking on a campfire, living out of a suitcase, and showering outdoors was strangely easy and liberating. Entertainment was limited to a couple of hours a day via a small solar-powered laptop, so I found a new distraction: Time. I was used to having so little of it and when I did, I used to fill it with useless things or waste it. Now I valued it and used it to explore our property and begin to think and use my imagination to see what we could do.

I would wander around and imagine that in between the endless stretch of trees were avocadoes, bananas, tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, and herbs growing. Over the hill, I could see chickens, goats, lambs, and alpaca. Whenever I felt overwhelmed and worried that we had taken a step too far, these visions cheered and focused me, and I knew we had made the right decision.

And that was the starting point of our sustainable living journey that has come to fruition and enabled us to create GROW and all that we have to offer you.
